How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

Try washing once a week. If it starts to look oily after 3 or 4 days, here are a few options:

  • Braid that bad girl

  • Wear a hat

  • Stay at home

  • Own it

  • Dry shampoo

  • Just wash your hair twice a week

There are no hard and fast rules to abide by, but the idea is to wash it less often. As you get into this routine and your body adjusts, your hair won’t get as oily quite as quick.

There are lots of oils, masks and intense repair conditioners to try out. Make sure to use one every week and try leaving it in overnight or for an hour before you shampoo. Which one is not as important as how often. Try a different single-use packet every time, look at reviews online, or ask me for a recommendation. There are lots of DIY homemade recipes for hair masks too! From avocado mush to raw eggs.

How Do You Wash Your Hair?

As far as products — shampoos, cowashes, homemade concoctions… Ask me for a recommendation for your specific needs and goals. I try lots of different products and have worked with so many clients over the years, so I might have a good idea every now and then 😀

Here are the official shampooing step-by-step instructions: If you are using shampoo, make sure to get your hair really soaked through, so that it’s laying flat as possible on your head. This takes a bit longer than you may think. Then apply the shampoo only the roots (as much as possible). Shampooing twice in a row is a good idea, especially if you don’t wash your hair often.

Wash your hair with cold water, please! I know it sucks, but it makes a HUGE difference. If you wimp out, at least give it a cold rinse before you step out of the shower. If you just can’t hack it, at least aim for lukewarm or not-scalding-hot. Cold or lukewarm water is actually better for your body too!

Drying is another critical step! After you’ve done any conditioning routine and rinsed your hair thoroughly, squeeze out any excess water with your hands. Please don’t rub a towel all over your head! You don’t have to walk around looking like a drowned rat, though. Just squeeze your hair with a towel to absorb as much water as possible. An extra absorbent towel is helpful.

Air dry your hair whenever you can. If you like the look, don’t feel obligated to use a blow dryer at all… ever! (Or just for special occasions.) Who actually likes taking the time and effort to do it anyway? …other than buff hair stylists with amazing biceps and triceps, like myself 😉 You leave it down, or put it up in a loose bun. Do it earlier in the day and enjoy some self-care time while it drys. Read a book, prep lunch and dinner ahead of time, or lay on the couch and watch Bridgerton… whatever floats your boat!

Detangle frequently! But please don’t comb or brush it while it’s wet. Use a wide tooth comb and a detangler spray if you need it. Also, keep those brushes and combs clean; replace them when needed.

Keep it loosey goosey. Sleep with your hair in a loose braid or bun. As much as possible, keep ponytails, buns and braids loose and/or use soft damage-mitigating elastics, scrunchies and barrettes. Save the free-flowing tresses look for nights out, flirtation opportunities and photo-shoots.

All of the above are tips and guides. Don’t get scrupulous about any of it. Just do what you can when you can. You’ll thank yourself for it when you look in the mirror!
